Christmas machine embroidery ideas
Christmas gifts to machine embroider, what each one needs, and how hoop fit follows the file's stitch width.
Published · Updated

Machine embroider a Christmas gift as a name or a small motif on a towel, a stocking cuff, an ornament, or fleece pajama pants. Add a gift bag, a wall hanging, or a store-bought apron, hat, or tote when you want a shorter project. Hoop fit is the embroidery file's stitch width and height against the machine's stitching field, and Sweet Pea says hoop sizes vary by machine brand and asks you to check the manual or the machine settings for the maximum stitching field in mm. WeAllSew points to designs under 3 inches for small projects and sizes a name to a 3-inch disc. Urban Threads states the finished size of the in-the-hoop stocking ornament at about 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches, then sews a finishing seam, trims, and turns the piece right side out. That finished size is a separate measurement from the stitch width. A sewn stocking starts from paper: Embroidery Library prints one paper pattern at roughly 16 inches tall by 9 inches wide and another paper pattern at roughly 21 inches tall by 11 inches wide, and hoops the fabric before cutting the stocking shape.
Gift list and what each needs
Each item below is a project a captured tutorial walks through. The need is the blank, the stabilizer, and the hoop note from that page. Lettering styles for a name are in embroidery design fonts and fonts for a monogram.
Towel
WeAllSew puts one festive design on a gift bag, a towel, a wall hanging, or a stocking, on anything you can hoop, using felt and tear-away in a medium hoop of 120mm by 180mm. For a terrycloth towel, WeAllSew uses stabilizer on the wrong side and a water-soluble stabilizer on top, so the stitches stay on the pile. Towel hooping, floating, and topping are in how to embroider on towels. Urban Threads also names gift towels as a place for the same applique style as their ornaments.
Stocking
WeAllSew sews a flannel or wool outer with a linen cuff, machine-embroiders a name on the cuff, asks for stabilizers appropriate for the cuff fabric, lists the difficulty as beginner, and lists the sewing time as an evening. Embroidery Library prints those two paper pattern sizes, sprays the fabric onto cutaway stabilizer, hoops the stack, stitches, and cuts the stocking shape after the embroidery. Applique placement is in simple applique designs.
In-the-hoop fabric ornament
Embroidery Library sews the ornament in the hoop, with a ribbon loop, and also uses that ornament as a gift tag, on craft felt, denim, twill, linen, flannel, or another tight weave, with medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway on the fabric pieces and tear-away in the hoop. For velvet or velour, Embroidery Library lays lightweight water-soluble stabilizer over the front so the stitches sit on the pile. WeAllSew makes a round ornament on linen with fusible woven and tear-away, selects a medium hoop, and sizes the name and motif to a 3-inch wood disc.
Lace ornament
Embroidery Library stitches freestanding lace ornaments on water-soluble stabilizer, either Vilene or Sulky Ultra Solvy, with 30-35 weight cotton thread and a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle, for holiday cards, stockings, or a tree.
Fleece pajama pants
Sulky treats fleece as a gift fabric and says to substitute fleece for knit when making pajama pants to open on Christmas Eve, with an embroidered pocket or a motif on the leg, and hoops Sticky+ so the fleece can float on the sticky surface, with Solvy floated on top, because clamping plush fleece in the hoop can leave a hoop mark.
Flannel nightwear
Sulky uses flannel for nightwear and baby items, says this nap fabric can be hooped, and treats a Solvy or Heat-Away topper as optional on washable flannel because the nap is short and compact. Sulky names Soft 'n Sheer or Tear-Easy as the backing, and Sticky+ as another way to hold the cloth. That page is about the fabric. The Christmas flannel project in this list is the stocking above.
Gift bag or wall hanging
The same WeAllSew design that goes on a towel also goes on a gift bag or a wall hanging, in about 20 minutes, with time to complete listed as less than one hour, using felt, tear-away, and the 120mm by 180mm hoop.
Store-bought apron, hat, tote, or flag
Embroidery Library uses store-bought blanks when the gift has to be finished soon: a canvas flag, an apron, a bucket hat, and a canvas tote, each with medium-weight cutaway on the back, larger than the hoop, and a printed template for the center. For the bucket hat, Embroidery Library recommends designs that are 3 inches by 3 inches or smaller. Embroidery Library cuts the tote open along the side seams so the front can be hooped, then stitches it closed again.
Shirt, onesie, bag, or pillow
Urban Threads uses the ornament artwork as applique on T-shirts and stockings, and also names tees, onesies, tanks, bags, and pillows as gift blanks. On a knit such as a T-shirt, a sweatshirt, or a baby onesie, WeAllSew uses cut-away stabilizer to keep the knit from stretching as you stitch. Shirt placement is in embroidery designs for shirts.
What fits a small hoop
Hoop fit is decided by the embroidery file's stitch width and height against the machine's stitching field. Sweet Pea says hoop sizes vary by machine brand and asks you to check the manual or the machine settings for the maximum stitching field in mm. A finished object size, and a paper pattern size, are separate measurements. Use a hoop number only when the captured page states that hoop or that design size.
- WeAllSew points to designs under 3 inches for small projects, sizes the name and motif to a 3-inch wood disc, and selects a medium hoop for that stitch-out.
- Embroidery Library recommends designs that are 3 inches by 3 inches or smaller for a bucket hat.
- WeAllSew runs the fringe design in a medium hoop of 120mm by 180mm.
- Urban Threads states the finished stocking ornament at about 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches after the piece is turned right side out, and that page does not state the stitch width or the stitch height, so this ornament's required field is not established by the captured tutorial.
- Embroidery Library prints paper patterns at roughly 16 inches tall by 9 inches wide and roughly 21 inches tall by 11 inches wide. Those are paper pattern sizes. The page later sews a seam and folds a cuff.
WeAllSew sizes the ornament lettering to a 3-inch disc on that project. A cuff name or a towel name still has to be judged from the embroidery file's stitch width and height, not from the blank. Drawing the motif is covered in how to make embroidery designs.
Stabilizer by fabric
These pages name more than one backing. Follow the page that matches the cloth.
Terrycloth takes stabilizer underneath and a water-soluble topper, from the WeAllSew napped-fabric tip. Felt for the fringe design takes tear-away, from the WeAllSew materials list. An applique stocking and a store-bought apron, hat, or tote take cutaway, from Embroidery Library and the gift-ideas page. An in-the-hoop fabric ornament takes medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway on the pieces and tear-away in the hoop, from Embroidery Library. A lace ornament takes water-soluble stabilizer, Vilene or Sulky Ultra Solvy, from Embroidery Library. Fleece pajama pants take Sticky+ in the hoop and Solvy floated on top, from Sulky. Flannel can be hooped with Soft 'n Sheer or Tear-Easy, or held with Sticky+, from Sulky. A knit shirt or onesie takes cut-away, from WeAllSew.
Timing before the holiday
If the holiday is close, pick a short stitch-out or a blank you already bought. WeAllSew times the fringe design at about 20 minutes and lists less than one hour to complete. Embroidery Library points to store-bought items for last-minute gifts. Urban Threads says the applique style stitches up in a pinch when Christmas is close. A sewn stocking takes longer: WeAllSew lists an evening for that project.
A name on the gift
WeAllSew puts a name on the stocking cuff. WeAllSew puts a name on the ornament with a small motif. Sulky uses a monogram on a fleece pullover as the same kind of personalization. That is the lettering job on these gifts.
The winter name set is coming soon at $13.00.
A reader who buys nothing still has the gift list and the stabilizer match. Hoop fit stays the embroidery file's stitch width and height against the machine's stitching field. A finished ornament size and a paper pattern size are separate measurements.
